Most visitors do not. If you hold a passport from one of 160+ countries, including all of ASEAN, the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, you can enter visa-free for tourism. The visa-free stay is usually 90 days, though some nationalities get 30 or 14 days. A visa is only required for a small number of nationalities. Separately, every traveller must complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online before arriving.
Your visa-free allowance depends on your nationality. These are the three common tiers, with example countries in each.
The largest group. Most Western and developed-economy passports, plus most of ASEAN.
and most other EU and Schengen countries
A short visa-free stay. Includes China and India under the policy in effect through 2026.
and a number of other nationalities
A smaller group of nationalities receives a 14-day visa-free stay on arrival.

Travellers whose nationality is not on the visa-free list have three main routes into Malaysia.
An electronic visa applied for online before you travel. Used by nationalities that are not eligible for visa-free entry. Approved travellers receive the visa by email to print and carry.
Electronic Travel Registration and Information. A simplified online registration that has been used for short visa-free visits by some nationalities, such as China and India, when travelling directly to Malaysia.
Available to a limited set of nationalities, mainly travellers entering Malaysia from Singapore, Thailand or Brunei who already hold a valid visa or pass for those countries. Most tourists will not need this route.
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is required for most foreign visitors entering Malaysia.
Have these ready before you travel and before starting your application.
Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with a blank page for the stamp

Start Your MDAC ApplicationMost travellers do not. Citizens of more than 160 countries, including all ASEAN nations, the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, can enter Malaysia visa-free for tourism. The visa-free stay is usually 90 days, though some nationalities get 30 or 14 days. Note that visa-free entry is separate from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), which everyone must complete online before arriving.
Visa-free stays are typically 90 days for citizens of the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and most ASEAN countries. Some nationalities receive 30 days (for example China and India under the visa-free policy running through 2026) and a smaller group receives 14 days. Your exact allowance depends on your nationality.
Visa-free social or tourist passes generally cannot be extended for leisure travel. If you need to stay longer, you must leave before your pass expires and, where required, apply for the appropriate visa or pass. Overstaying carries fines and possible entry bans.
Malaysia offers a limited Visa on Arrival for certain nationalities, mainly travellers arriving from Singapore, Thailand or Brunei who already hold a valid visa or pass for those countries. Most tourists do not use this because they qualify for visa-free entry or apply for an eVisa in advance.
A visa is permission to enter the country, required only by nationalities that are not visa-free. The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is a free arrival declaration that every foreign visitor must submit online before arriving, whether or not they need a visa. They are two separate requirements.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry into Malaysia and should have at least one blank page for the immigration stamp.
No. Visa-free and tourist entry is for leisure, family visits and short business meetings only. Working, studying or long-term stays require the correct employment, student or long-term pass arranged before or after arrival.
Yes, the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is completely free. There is no charge for submitting the form. Beware of third-party websites that may charge fees.
You can submit the MDAC up to 3 days before your arrival in Malaysia. We recommend submitting it at least 24 to 48 hours before your flight to allow time for any corrections if needed.
While kiosks may be available at some airports, it is highly recommended to complete the MDAC online before your trip to avoid delays at immigration.
If you notice an error after submission, you can submit a new application with the correct information. Use the most recent submission when arriving in Malaysia.
Yes, every traveller including children needs their own MDAC submission. Parents can fill out the form on behalf of their children.
No, the MDAC is only required for foreign nationals entering Malaysia. Malaysian citizens are exempt.
