The heart of Kuala Lumpur beats loudest during Ramadan, and nowhere is this more evident than at Bazaar Ramadan Jalan TAR. Located along one of the city’s oldest and most iconic streets, this stretch transforms into a sensory overload - charcoal smoke curling into the evening air, sizzling satay skewers, and the unmistakable aroma of freshly grilled murtabak. This is the place where locals gather to break their fast, and where curious travelers find a crash course in Malaysia’s street food culture.
The area is easily accessible, situated near the Masjid Jamek LRT station, making it a convenient stop for both locals and tourists.
Here, the choices are overwhelming in the best way possible. Ayam percik, its marinated chicken slow-roasted over open flames, is a favorite, as is nasi kerabu, a blue-tinted rice dish paired with fresh herbs, salted egg, and fried fish or chicken. The undisputed kings of the bazaar are murtabak and roti john - savory, meaty, and loaded with flavor. Sweet tooth? Look for putu piring, steamed rice cakes with molten palm sugar, or tepung pelita, a creamy pandan dessert encased in banana leaves.
