Pulau Rebak Red Beds Geosite, situated northwest of Langkawi, is a fascinating geological site that features both sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The sedimentary rocks are composed of shale and red mudrocks, while the metamorphic rocks are quartzite, transformed from sandstone grains. The red layer, attributed to the iron oxide mineral hematite, is part of the ancient Singa Formation, dating back to the Early Carboniferous period (around 350 million years ago). This layer, formed in a deep-sea environment, houses marine bivalves such as various species of Posidonia. The site is of great significance as it marks the deepening of the ancient sea and the sediment deposition process of the Singa Formation. Today, a portion of the island has been developed into a resort and marina. The clear outcrops along the rocky shores make it an ideal spot for public education and beach recreation. This geosite, representing the geological age boundary between Devonian and Carboniferous, is preserved as a national heritage.
