Tucked within the suburban sprawl of Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, this Ramadan bazaar is a local institution. Come 4 PM, the streets swell with food stalls, each manned by vendors who know their craft. It’s not just a market - it’s a full-blown culinary event that locals anticipate year-round.
Here, smoke billows from sizzling ayam percik, its coconut-infused marinade caramelizing over charcoal. Murtabak - thick, stuffed and searing hot - competes for attention with piping hot roti john oozing with egg, meat, and sauce. Nasi kerabu, its blue rice vibrant against the golden hues of fried chicken and the earthy greens of ulam, is a bestseller. Meanwhile, sup gearbox, a gelatinous, marrow-rich broth, draws the boldest of eaters.
For iftar, start with a serving of nasi dagang, its fragrant rice paired with slow-cooked tuna. Try the grilled lamb, basted and charred to perfection. If you crave something hearty, mee rebus hits the spot with thick noodles drenched in a spiced potato-based gravy. Satay? Always a safe bet, especially the beef variety with its smoky, peanut-laced punch. For those preferring lighter bites, popiah basah or otak-otak delivers.
No Ramadan experience is complete without kuih. Kuih pelita, layered with pandan and coconut cream, disappears fast, while lompat tikam - a mix of rice flour pudding, gula melaka and coconut milk - is a crowd favorite. Get them from the older vendors; they’ve perfected the balance of sweetness and texture.
Reaching the bazaar is simple - take the MRT to Bandar Tun Hussein Onn station, then hop on a Grab. Parking is limited, so arrive early. Expect to spend about an hour here, but if you’re a serious foodie, two hours won’t feel like enough.
