Shah Alam, Selangor
Dataran Kemerdekaan (Independence Square) is the civic square at the heart of Shah Alam's Seksyen 14 government precinct, alongside the Blue Mosque, Sultan Alam Shah Museum and the city's clock tower. It takes its name from Shah Alam's role as Selangor's state capital, formally proclaimed on 7 December 1978, and the square has since served as the state's ceremonial ground for Malaysia's National Day (Hari Kebangsaan) commemorations. Shah Alam itself was elevated to city status on 10 October 2000. The square's largest recent event was Selangor's state-level 68th National Day celebration on 30 August 2025, when Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari declared the Keramat Merdeka before a crowd of more than 70,000, with 81 parade contingents and a closing concert by the band Bunkface, well above the 30,000 to 50,000 visitors originally projected.

Seksyen 14 civic precinct setting
The square sits in Shah Alam's administrative core on Persiaran Bandar Raya, within walking distance of the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, Sultan Alam Shah Museum and the city's clock tower.
Annual Merdeka Day parade ground
The square is Selangor's recurring venue for state-level Hari Kebangsaan flag-raising ceremonies and parades, rotating each year with other host towns but returning frequently to Shah Alam as the state capital.
Large-capacity open grounds
Its open layout can accommodate tens of thousands of visitors for major state events, as shown by the more than 70,000 who attended the 2025 National Day celebration.
Namesake of Shah Alam's capital status
The square's name commemorates Shah Alam's own founding as Selangor's independence-era state capital, formally proclaimed in 1978 after Kuala Lumpur became a Federal Territory.
The name marks its role as Shah Alam's ceremonial civic square, tied to the city's status as Selangor's state capital (formally proclaimed on 7 December 1978) and its recurring use for Malaysia's National Day (Hari Kebangsaan) celebrations.

Yes. Dataran Shah Alam is the everyday, informal name for the same civic square; Dataran Kemerdekaan (Shah Alam Independence Square) is its official name, and both refer to the same Seksyen 14 ground that also holds the city's clock tower and tourism information centre.
