About

Tanjung Dendang Sea-Notch, nestled in Langkawi, is a geosite that marks the highest prehistoric sea level recorded in the area. This old sea level is positioned 23 meters above the present sea level. The site houses stacks of shells from ancient marine creatures like Saccostrea cucullata stone oysters, Anadara granosa shells, Ostrea sp., and Telescopium telescopium snails. These shells, estimated to be around 7,000 years old, offer scientific proof that the sea level in the Langkawi Archipelago back then was over 20 meters above today’s sea level. The sea level variations over the years are credited to the region’s tectonic activity or climate change. The vegetation at Tanjung Dendang Sea-Notch is marked by sandy beach and limestone flora, including Cycad clivicola. The adjacent beach, known as Dead China Bay, is thought to be linked with Chinese traders who once visited Langkawi but met their end there. This geosite is ideal for hill-climbing and public recreation.
