Tanjung Dendang Sea-Notch

There is substantial evidence of higher, ancient, sea levels in Langkawi as seen by the appearance of sea notches, which are the remnants of old wave erosion levels which occur at the base of a cliff. Within this notch multiple types of marine shells were deposited, of which are now 23m above current sea levels.

This remnant island is located at the southernmost tip of Pulau Langgun and is made up of limestones rich with fossils, particularly gastropods and cephalopods. The island was formed through prolonged erosion along a weaker zone within the neck of an ancient headland.

Cut hillsides reveal dark, bioturbated mudstones from the Singa Formation, with fossil-rich layers near the hilltop. Early Permian brachiopods suggest a cool climate. Bryozoans, bivalves, ammonites, and corals are also found.

The Dangli Remnant Islands consist of Pulau Dangli, Pulau Pasir and Pulau Gasing and are made up of greyish limestone from the Setul Formation; they have evidence of sea level changes, weathering Feature of island karsts and current wave erosion. These islands are also host to unique flora and fauna within the limestone.

Tanjung Mali Dropstone

Several isolated dropstones of quartzite and granite are embedded in hardened, dark coloured Singa Formation silt/mudstones. Tight slump folds are visible especially at the southern end of this coastal outcrop. This is the only on-land site for dropstones in Langkawi and can be accessed by car, taxi or walking.
