About This Adventure Tour

Escape the ordinary and discover Lata Medang — a stunning multi-tier waterfall hidden deep within the tropical rainforest near Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor. Less crowded than popular spots like Sungai Chiling, this serene natural gem offers a peaceful, rewarding jungle experience for those willing to seek it out.

The trail begins at Kampung Pertak, near the Kuala Kubu Bharu dam, winding through lush tropical rainforest with several river crossings along the way. Covering approximately 12 km return with an elevation gain of around 400 metres, the hike strikes a satisfying balance between challenge and reward — rated 3/10 in difficulty, it sits comfortably in the easy category while still offering enough terrain variety to keep things engaging throughout.

The highlight of the journey is the trail's finale, a breathtaking 20-metre waterfall cascading into natural pools, perfect for a refreshing dip when water levels are safe. The falls are dramatically beautiful and blissfully uncrowded, making them a true sanctuary for nature lovers, weekend hikers, and anyone craving a genuine rainforest escape.

Do come prepared,  the trail features slippery rocks near the water and leeches are common, particularly in wetter sections. Proper footwear and leech repellent are strongly recommended. A mandatory forestry permit is required, and while a licensed MGP Guide is optional, one is recommended for those less familiar with jungle trails.

Note that a small entry fee of RM2 per person and parking fee of RM5 per car (if parking inside the Blue Gate) are payable on-site directly to the local Orang Asli community of Kampung Pertak.

What to Expect

Your adventure starts at Kampung Pertak, where the trail leads you immediately into dense tropical rainforest alongside the river. The path weaves through the jungle with several refreshing river crossings — expect your feet to get wet early and often. The terrain is varied and engaging, moving between riverside tracks, forested inclines, and rocky sections as you gradually gain elevation. Keep an eye out for leeches in wetter patches of the trail, and watch your footing on mossy rocks. After approximately 2 to 2.5 hours of trekking, the forest opens up to reveal Lata Medang,  a spectacular 20-metre multi-tier waterfall tumbling into clear, cool natural pools. Rest, swim (when water levels are safe), and take in the rare tranquility of this unspoiled corner of Selangor before making your way back along the same trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.

What makes Lata Medang different from other waterfalls near KL?

Lata Medang stands out for its dramatic 20-metre multi-tier cascade and its blissfully uncrowded setting. Unlike more well-known spots such as Sungai Chiling, Lata Medang sees far fewer visitors — making it a genuinely serene escape. The trail through Kampung Pertak also passes through authentic Orang Asli territory, adding a meaningful cultural dimension to the experience.

2.

Are there river crossings on this trail?

Yes, the trail features several river crossings throughout the 12 km return route. Expect your feet to get wet, so water-friendly footwear or hiking sandals are strongly recommended. Store all electronics and valuables in a waterproof dry bag before setting off.

3.

Are there leeches on the trail?

Yes, leeches are commonly found on this trail, especially in wetter and shadier sections of the jungle. Wearing leech socks and tucking in your shirt significantly reduces the risk. Leech repellent spray is also highly recommended. While leeches are harmless, being well-prepared makes for a much more comfortable hike.

4.

Are there any additional fees not included in my booking?

Yes — upon arrival at Kampung Pertak, you will need to pay a small entry fee of RM2 per person and a parking fee of RM5 per car if parking inside the designated Blue Gate area. Parking outside the Blue Gate is free. These fees are collected directly by the local Orang Asli community and are not part of your JomHiking booking.

5.

Is this hike suitable for beginners and families?

Lata Medang is rated 3/10 in difficulty — easy, but with more distance and elevation than a typical beginner trail. At 12 km return with a 400-metre elevation gain, a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. Children aged 5 and above are welcome. First-timers are encouraged to book with an optional guide for added confidence and safety on the trail.
