Laman Budaya is a fountain in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.
Laman Budaya is Shah Alam's cultural space on Tasik Barat, the Western Lake of Taman Tasik Shah Alam. It's where the city puts local culture on show. Performances, competitions, exhibitions and public events all come through here, run by the city council and the state's arts bodies.
The anchor is Galeri Shah Alam, the state art gallery. Yayasan Seni Selangor set it up in 1991, and Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah opened it that July. The building itself draws on traditional Malay architecture and carving. Inside, exhibitions change through the year. Its annual open exhibition, running since 1991, has reached its 30th edition, and it's one of the longest-running open calls for Malaysian artists.
Outside, the performance space hosts traditional dance and music. Selangor's state culture and arts department (JKKN) stages shows in the first and third weeks of the month, and other programmes fill the rest. Weekends are the busiest time, with local performers and artists using the space. Check the schedule before you come, because programmes change.
The grounds are free and open, so the visit doesn't need much planning. Start at the gallery in the late afternoon, catch a performance if one is on, and walk the edge of the Western Lake as the heat drops. It's the part of Shah Alam where culture happens in public, by the water, without a ticket or a queue.
