It's the exact site where Malaysia's independence was proclaimed. On 31 August 1957, first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman declared "Merdeka" seven times before a packed crowd as the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag raised, marking the end of British rule.
Construction broke ground on 25 September 1956 and the stadium opened on 21 August 1957, just over a year, timed deliberately to be ready for the independence proclamation.
