About

Located within the Perdana Botanical Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian Houses of Parliament is the official seat of the national legislature. Completed in 1963, the complex consists of two main blocks: a 17-storey administrative tower and a lower legislative building housing the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) and Dewan Negara (Senate). Designed by architect Ivor Shipley, the structure features modernist architectural elements, incorporating clean lines, reinforced concrete, and distinctive brise-soleil panels for climate control. The complex blends functionalist design with tropical adaptations, representative of Malaysia’s post-independence aspirations.

While the Parliament building is primarily a working government facility, limited public access is available through pre-arranged guided tours, usually organized for educational groups or through special government permissions. Visitors must apply in advance and undergo security screening. The surrounding area, including Perdana Botanical Gardens and Tugu Negara (National Monument), offers a quiet, formal ambience with landscaped greenery and broad civic spaces.

Due to its administrative purpose and high security, casual drop-in visits are not permitted. However, its external architecture can be viewed from the gardens and nearby vantage points.
